Pakistan and China Relation: The whole world knows the friendship between Pakistan and China. China keeps helping Pakistan from time to time, but now this relationship has started turning sour and China seems to be very worried about the safety of its citizens in Pakistan. Now he does not have the same trust in Pakistan as before.

The surprising thing is that the reason for this sourness is the same project due to which the friendship between them is so good. According to Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune, China has refused to accept Pakistan’s proposals in many areas like energy, water management and climate change under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.

Pakistan is trying to calm China’s anger

According to this report, seeing this anger of China, Pakistan has now come into action. The Pakistani Army has made the security arrangements stronger than ever to protect the Chinese engineers working on this project and their business interests. Not only this, now Pakistan Minister Sami Saeed will keep reviewing the security arrangements from time to time. This decision has been taken in the top level committee meeting of CPEC between Pakistan and China.

Why did China get angry?

In fact, Chinese citizens working on this project were being attacked continuously. Pakistan was not succeeding in protecting the Chinese people. In such a situation, China took it seriously and China distanced itself from the expansion of CPEC. To appease the angry China, Pakistan gave many assurances regarding security. Now it has been decided that whenever Chinese citizens working in the CPEC project go out of their homes, they will be taken in bulletproof cars.

These decisions were taken after resentment

According to a document of the CPEC committee meeting, China has flatly refused to cooperate on the proposals for promotion of cross border tourism and coastal tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Apart from this, Dragon has also removed details related to the financial challenges of many power companies from the documents. Pakistan had asked China to postpone the 300 MW power project being built in Gwadar or to shift the project to Thar (Tharparkar) to use local coal, which China refused to accept.

This is also the reason behind this

This is not the first time that China is avoiding investing money in this project. Now the question is whether the problem is only about security or there is something else too. According to a report by Nikkei Asia, Pakistan did not make any payment for the power plants built under CPEC, which is a reason for China’s displeasure. Apart from this, Pakistan is also bargaining with China to reduce the cost of the largest railway line to be built under CPEC.

What is CPEC project?

CPEC is a bilateral project between China and Pakistan. If we talk about its length, then it is a 3,000 km long route of basic infrastructure project connecting China’s northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Gwadar Port in Pakistan’s western province of Balochistan. The objective of this project is to promote connectivity across Pakistan through a network of highways, railways and pipelines along with energy, industrial and other basic infrastructure development projects. This will create a way for China to reach the Middle East and Africa from Gwadar Port.
