He said Moscow wants to join efforts by an economic alliance of former Soviet Union countries, mostly based in Central Asia.
There will be frank discussion on financial relations
Putin said he and Xi Jinping would also discuss growing economic and financial ties between Moscow and Beijing. We will work towards financial relations between the two countries and payments in national currencies. Apart from this, both the countries will talk about high-tech areas in the energy sector.
China is a big market for Russian goods
Alexander Gabiev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, says that while China benefits from Russia, Russia is also getting help from China in many aspects. For Russia, China is its lifeline and economic lifeline in its brutal repression against Ukraine. China is the major market for Russian goods, a country that provides its own currency and payment system to organize Russia’s trade with the outside world.
There is less possibility of military alliance
Gabuev said that while Moscow and Beijing would be unlikely to form a full military alliance, their defense cooperation would grow. The reason behind both of them not forming a military alliance is that both the countries are self-reliant in terms of security. Apart from this, both will make more joint efforts to develop missile defense system.
Better relations since the attack on Ukraine
Just weeks before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Putin met Xi in Beijing and the two sides signed an agreement promising a “no-borders” relationship. Then Beijing tried to show itself neutral in the Russia-Ukraine war and several times proposed talks between the two countries.
