Second Nakba: Friday (October 13) has been an important day in the war between Israel and Hamas. The Israeli army asked the Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip to leave the northern part of Gaza and move towards the south. Gaza’s population is 2.3 million, out of which more than 1 million people live in Northern Gaza. However, due to fear of Israeli bombing, Palestinians living in northern Gaza hastily started moving towards the south.

The march of Palestinians towards southern Gaza has been going on since Friday. Some people have started calling this incident the second ‘Nakba’. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is also included among these people. Apart from taking ground action in the northern part of Gaza, the Israeli army has also carried out bombing. In such a situation, let us know today what is Nakba, when did it happen for the first time and what is the importance of Nakba in the history of Palestine-Israel.

What is Nakba?

For Palestinians around the world, May 15 is a reminder of a dark chapter in history. This day is called Nakba. In Arabic language it means ‘destruction’. In fact, when Israel was formed on May 14, 1948, the next day 7.5 lakh Palestinians were rendered homeless. Frustrated by the actions of the Israeli army, Palestinians fled their homes. Some people left empty handed and some with their houses locked.

Palestinian people leaving their homes

Palestinians keep the keys of their homes safe and every year on May 15, they show it to the world as a symbol. ‘Nakba Day’ was started by former Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in 1998 to remember the Nakba. Since then, Palestinians around the world celebrate it every year. The year Arafat announced Nakba Day, Israel was celebrating the 50th anniversary of its formation.

When did the first Nakba happen, what is its connection with Palestine?

In fact, after the First World War, Britain promised the Jews through the ‘Balfour Declaration’ that it would divide Palestine and give them a new country. This enraged the Palestinian people. In the 20th century, Jews were already reaching Palestine fleeing the atrocities happening in Europe. Troubled by the atrocities, the Jews had been demanding for a long time that they should get a separate country. Jews coming from Europe also started settling in Jerusalem and its surrounding areas.

With the arrival of the Jews, their conflict with the Palestinians also began. The Jews said that their holy temple ‘The Holy of Holies’ once existed here. On the basis of this, they started calling Palestine their motherland. The ‘Wall of the Mount’ present in Jerusalem is said to be a part of the same temple. After the Second World War, the number of Jews coming from Palestine started increasing even more.

Palestinian exodus

By 1945, when the conflict between Palestinian Arabs and Jews increased, Britain handed the matter over to the United Nations. The United Nations decided that Palestine should be divided into two countries. The Jews were happy with this, but there was resentment among the Palestinians. The UN said that it will have control over Jerusalem. In the early days of 1948, Jews captured many villages in Palestine. Then on 14th May 1948, a new country was formed as Israel.

With the formation of Israel, its army started crushing the Palestinian rebellion. Now a new country had been formed in the world and because of this, the Palestinians who lived in the Israeli part, started leaving their homes the next day on May 15. It is said that after partition, 7.5 lakh Palestinians left their homes. Some people hoped that he would return when the situation became normal, but it did not happen. This is called the first Nakba.
