Israeli Tourists Shot Dead: In the Egyptian city of Alexandria, a police officer has shot dead two Israeli tourists and an Egyptian citizen. The attack reportedly took place at Alexandria’s Serapeum, an ancient Roman monument in the center of the coastal city, The Guardian reported, quoting news website Cairo 24.

Cairo 24, a website linked to Egypt’s intelligence services, said a police officer working with the security service in the area opened indiscriminate fire from his personal weapon at an Israeli tourist group visiting the temple, the report said.

“The police officer was immediately arrested and legal action will be taken against him,” he said. An injured person was taken to the hospital for treatment.

This attack is another example of the increase in violent incidents related to Gaza in the country. This incident has happened amid the infiltration of Palestinian extremists into the Israeli areas bordering the Gaza Strip and the ongoing firing between Hezbollah and the Israeli army on Israel’s northern border.

Relations between Egypt and Israel have remained very close for many years.
Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1979. At the same time, very close public relations have been maintained in recent years. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi were seen talking very closely during the 2017 meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.

Egypt closed the border with Gaza Strip
Egyptian officials, particularly top intelligence official Abbas Kamel, have played a leading role in mediating talks with Palestinian extremist groups in an effort to establish peace in Gaza, The Guardian reports. Egypt has also closed its border with the Gaza Strip.
