How did the Israel-Palestine dispute start?
There were a large number of Jews in Europe at the beginning of the twentieth century. But they were continuously being discriminated against, due to which they started leaving Europe and reaching Palestine. Palestine once came under the Ottoman Empire. Palestinian Arabs used to live here. Apart from this, Palestine was a religiously important place, because the city of Jerusalem here was holy for Muslims, Jews and Christianity.
The Jews coming from Europe wanted a new country for themselves. He claimed that Palestine was his land. He used to say this by quoting religious texts. Due to the increasing population of Jews, their conflict with Arab people started. The Ottoman Empire was defeated in the First World War and the area of Palestine came under the control of Britain. After winning the war, France and Britain divided the Middle East, which created tension between Jews and Arabs.
What was Hitler’s role?
After the First World War, Jews started leaving Europe in large numbers for America, Britain, South America, France and Palestine. The biggest increase in the migration of Jews occurred when Adolf Hitler became the dictator of Germany in 1933. During his reign, persecution of Jews increased so much that they were forced to flee their country. Most Jews decided to come to Israel because they considered it a religious homeland.
During Hitler’s era, 6 million Jews were killed. At one time there was a sizeable population of Jews from Poland, Germany to France. Today the Jews had to flee from there. The main reason for this was Hitler. About 75 thousand Jews reached Palestine in 1922-26, whereas in 1935 the number of Jews going here was 60 thousand. After the war ended, all the Jews left in Europe started going to Palestine to create a new country for themselves.
How did the Israel-Palestine dispute escalate?
There was already resentment among the Arabs against the Jews. But when the demand for a new country for the Jews arose after the Second World War, Britain got the entire responsibility for it. In 1947, the United Nations held a vote on creating separate countries for Jews and Arabs in Palestine. The UN had also made it clear that Jerusalem will remain an international city. The Jews were happy with this, but there was a lot of anger among the Arabs regarding this decision. Therefore this proposal was never implemented.
On the other hand, Britain left Palestine in 1948. After this, the Jewish leaders themselves established Israel on May 14, 1948. As soon as this was done from Israel’s side, Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq from Palestine’s side attacked this area. This is known as the first Israel-Palestine conflict. After this war, separate land was set aside for the Arabs. But due to the war, 7.5 lakh Jews became homeless.
When the countries fighting for Palestine were defeated, due to this the Arabs got a small part of the land for Palestine. The land that the Arabs got was called West Bank and Gaza. Israel used to come between the two places. At the same time, the city of Jerusalem was divided into east and west. The west was occupied by Israel, while Jordanian security forces were deployed in the east. All this was happening without any peace agreement.
In the year 1967, once again there was a war between Palestine and Israel. But this time Israel attacked even more aggressively and captured a large part of Palestine. He captured both the West Bank and Gaza. He later left the Gaza Strip, but kept the West Bank under his control. On top of that, East Jerusalem also came under Israel’s control. Palestinians now live only in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
