Israel Attacks Hamas: Palestine’s Hamas fighters launched an all-out attack on Israel on Saturday (7 October 2023) and captured many positions. After suddenly firing at least 7000 rockets, Hamas fighters crossed the border of Gaza Strip and entered Israel.

Some Hamas fighters entered the Gaza Strip by firing from the border, while some landed on the Israeli border through sky diving. Apart from this, Hamas fighters also entered the Israeli border through the river adjacent to the Gaza Strip and carried out attacks.

Israel has suffered huge losses due to this sudden attack, after which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared a state of emergency in the country. There have been violent conflicts between Israel and Palestine for a long time. In this, the name of Hamas has always come up for violent attacks in Israel. Like Hamas, there is another militant organization in Palestine named ‘Fatah’. It means ‘victory’. It also fought a war with Israel for 40 years since its establishment but could not win.

Let us know what is the difference between these two groups of Palestine. Even though the objective of both of them is the same to re-occupy the disputed territory of Israel, there is a fundamental difference between the two.

There is war over disputed area on the border

Both Hamas and Fatah want to re-incorporate the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and the Jerusalem area, which Israel captured in 1967, as a state of Palestine. Although Hamas wants to snatch this share from Israel through war instead of negotiations, Fatah has become an organization that believes in negotiations after nearly 40 years of violent fighting (1950-1990).

There is a big difference between Hamas and Fatah

Hamas is a fundamentalist Islamic organization while Fatah gives priority to secularism. Talking about strategy towards Israel, Hamas is in favor of armed war while Fatah wants to re-establish rule over the disputed part through negotiations. Fatah is an Arabic word whose English name is National Liberation Movement and means “victory”.

Fatah established in Kuwait

Fatah was founded in 1950 by expatriate Palestinians in Kuwait. Late Palestine Authority President Yasser Arafat, Khalil Al Wazir, Salah Khalaf and Mahmoud Abbas were instrumental in its establishment. Abbas is currently the President of the Palestinian Authority. At the time of its establishment, its objective was armed fight against Israel. Then the name of its army was Alshifa, which means ‘Storm’.

Announcement of giving up arms after defeat by Israel

Its fighters were then in many Arab countries as well as in the West Bank and Gaza. Fatah began an armed war against Israel in 1965 from Jordan and Lebanon. After the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, Fatah emerged as the most powerful group of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

However, after Israel’s victory in the war and Arab defeat, the Fatah group was expelled from Jordan and Lebanon, after which it changed its strategy in the 1970s and 80s and came on the path of negotiations with Israel. In 1990, Fatah announced a peaceful solution to the issue by abandoning weapons.

The proposal of the United Nations Security Council was important

According to Al Jazeera’s report, Palestine Liberation Organization was established in 1964 to liberate Palestine. There were many organizations including Fatah in it. In 1990, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution announcing the creation of the State of Palestine according to the 1967 borders. Only after this did Fatah give up his weapons. However, the existence of Israel was also accepted in the Security Council resolution.

Now let’s talk about Hamas

Hamas was founded by Imam Sheikh Ahmed Yassir and Abdul Aziz Al Rantisi in Gaza in 1987, 3 years before the UN Security Council resolution. Since its inception its objective has been armed war against Israel.

The movement began as a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and formed a military brigade called Izz al-Din al-Qassam to lead an armed struggle against Israel with the aim of liberating historic Palestine. It began helping Palestinian victims of Israeli occupation in many ways.

Unity made a weapon in the name of Islam

Hamas has been calling for worldwide unity in the name of Islam and has been calling its violent war a war for Islam. After the attack on Israel on Saturday (October 7), it has released a video and appealed to the Muslim countries around the world including Iran, Iraq, Syria to unite and help in the name of Islam.

In 2017, Hamas issued a political document saying that its only demand is the complete independence of Palestine from sea, river and from all sides. Along with this, Hamas had refused to accept the existence of Israel. This was contrary to the United Nations Security Council resolution in 1990.

There has been war with Israel four times

Since 2007, Israel has carried out four major attacks against Hamas. In an exclusive conversation with Al Jazeera, Hazim Abu Halal, an Islamic activist living in Ramallah, says, “Hamas has a large support base that works to propagate its work around the world. Work is also done to propagate its ideology. Hamas has been the most effective organization to win elections in Palestine.”

Halal said, “If you ask college students today, hardly anyone will know about Fatah or its ideas, but the people (of Palestine) are well aware of Hamas and its goals.”

He hinted that after the 1990 UN Security Council resolution, Hamas has basically been working to continue violent resistance against Israel. Whereas Fatah has moved away from this path.
