India Maldives Relations: In the recent presidential elections held in Maldives, China-backed candidate Mohammed Muizzu emerged as the winner. He defeated India-backed candidate Ibrahim Solih in the presidential election by a huge margin of about 18 thousand votes. However, this victory of Mohammad Muizzu is not considered good for India in many ways. There are many reasons behind this, but the biggest reason is Mohammad Muizzu’s attachment towards China.

Let us tell you that in Maldives, 50 percent votes are required for any candidate to win the post of President. In this way, Mohammad Muizzu crossed this figure and won the election. Before winning the presidential election in Maldives, Mohammed Muizzu held the post of Mayor in Male. He is supported by former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen, who is widely considered to have close ties to China. Currently former President Abdullah Yameen is serving a jail sentence. He played an important role in the anti-India Indian Out campaign.

Opposition to support India
After winning the recent presidential elections, Mohammad Muizzu clearly expressed his intentions against India. He said in a recent statement that his government will not hinder projects beneficial to the people of Maldives.

Let us tell you that during the year 2018, as soon as President Solih took office, India had promised to provide assistance of $ 1.4 billion for various projects including the major Greater Male Connectivity Project in Maldives. For this, Mohammad Muizzu had accused President Solih of compromising the independence and sovereignty of Maldives by seeking India’s support for every major decision.

Former President Abdullah Yameen has demanded
Former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen, during his tenure, had requested for the removal of Indian Navy helicopters and personnel from Maldives. Muizzu has also indicated his willingness to adopt a similar stance. India’s involvement in Maldives goes beyond military exercises, maritime domain awareness and provision of hardware and infrastructure development. It also includes initiatives like Coastal Radar System (CRS) and construction of a new Defense Ministry headquarters in Maldives.

In view of these developments, the outcome of the Maldivian presidential runoff has brought a new dynamic to the region, impacting India’s political interests and its relations with the Maldives. The effects of this change will undoubtedly be closely monitored in the coming months.

Main reason for President Solih’s defeat
There are many reasons behind Ibrahim Solih’s defeat in the presidential elections.

  • Alleged failures to deal with corruption issues.
  • Lax approach towards infrastructure projects and differences with former President Mohammed Nasheed.
  • Former President Mohammed Nasheed breaking ties with the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to establish his own political party.
  • Despite last-minute efforts to reconcile Solih and Nasheed, no agreement could be reached.
