Addressing the ‘International Lawyers’ Symposium of 2023′ at Vigyan Bhawan in the heart of Delhi, PM Modi underscored the paramount significance of lawyers and the judiciary in molding India’s legal framework and ensuring the preservation of law and order.

“India has recently commemorated 75 years of independence. In the arduous journey toward independence, the legal fraternity emerged as a stalwart force. Numerous legal luminaries forsook their legal practice to join the cause of independence,” Prime Minister Modi articulated.

“The legal fraternity assumes an exceedingly crucial role in the nation-building process. Throughout the annals of history, the judiciary and the Bar have stood as sentinels of law and order in India,” he appended.

Prime Minister Modi articulated that his administration is resolutely endeavoring to draft legislation in a manner that is both accessible and comprehensible to the masses, with a specific emphasis on employing indigenous languages to the utmost degree.

“We, within the precincts of the Indian government, contemplate a dual approach to the formulation of laws. One iteration will be articulated in the vernacular with which you are familiar,” he articulated to the assembly comprised primarily of legal scholars. “The secondary iteration shall be presented in a manner that resonates with the common citizen of our nation, who should perceive the law as an intrinsic part of their lives.”

The Prime Minister proceeded to underscore the age-old tradition within India of dispute resolution through Panchayats, a practice deeply entrenched within the cultural fabric of the nation.

In an effort to lend structure to this time-honored arrangement, the government has recently promulgated the Mediation Act, a legislative measure designed to institute a structured framework for informal conflict resolution.

“In order to lend structure to this time-honored arrangement, the government has recently promulgated the Mediation Act,” he accentuated.

Furthermore, he alluded to the serendipitous convergence of the International Lawyers’ Symposium with several momentous developments in India, including the ratification of the women’s reservation bill and the successful touchdown of the Chandrayaan-3 mission on the southern polar expanse of the Moon.

“This symposium is convened at a juncture when India is embarking on numerous historic initiatives. Most recently, the Women’s Reservation Bill secured approval in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam promises to chart a novel course and infuse renewed vigor into the ‘women-centric development in India,'” he remarked.

Prime Minister Modi also reiterated the government’s ambitious aspiration of propelling India into the echelons of developed nations by the year 2047, underscoring the indispensable role of an impartial, robust, and autonomous judiciary in realizing this overarching objective.

“We are steadfast in our commitment to achieve developed nation status by 2047. To attain this milestone, an equitable, fortified, and autonomous judiciary is indispensable… It is my fervent hope that this symposium shall serve as a crucible of shared wisdom and mutual learning for all participants.”
