Maldives Presidential Runoff: The results of the presidential elections in Maldives have been announced. In this election, opposition candidate Mohammed Muiz defeated the current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Saturday (September 30). According to the report of Maldives’ local media Miharu News, opposition candidate Mohammed Muizz got more than 53 percent votes, while Ibrahim Mohammed Solih got only 46 percent votes. In this way Mohammad Muiz defeated Ibrahim Mohammad Solih by more than 18,000 votes.

After winning the presidential elections in Maldives, Muiz said in a statement that today’s result has given us an opportunity to build the future of the country. Has the power to ensure the independence of Maldives. Now the time has come that we forget our differences and come together. We need to become a peaceful society. Muiz also requested that Solih release former President Abdulla Yameen from jail. Yameen’s supporters say that he has been jailed for political reasons.

Muiz’s People’s National Congress Party is pro-Chinese
The presidential election in the Maldives had turned into a virtual referendum as it depended on which country would have the biggest influence in the Indian Ocean archipelago nation. This country includes India and China. However, Muiz’s People’s National Congress party is seen as heavily pro-Chinese and Ibrahim Mohammad Solih is seen as heavily pro-India.

After the results came out, Mohammad Sharif, a top official of Muiz’s party, said that today’s result is a reflection of the patriotism of our people. We call on all our neighbors and bilateral partners to fully respect our independence and sovereignty.

Muiz has accused Solih
Neither Muizz nor Solih received more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round of voting in early September. Solih who was elected President of Maldives in 2018. Muiz had accused him of allowing India to have uncontrolled presence in the country. On this, Solih had said that the presence of the Indian Army in Maldives was only to build a dock under an agreement between the two governments and the sovereignty of his country would not be violated.

Muiz had promised that if he won the presidency, he would remove Indian troops from Maldives. He will balance the country’s trade relations. He had said that it is largely in favor of India.
