Thailand criminalizing marijuana: All restrictions on selling or using marijuana were lifted in Thailand from June 9, 2022. After the ban was lifted, it started being sold in shops everywhere in the country. But after decriminalizing the use and sale of marijuana, many concerns have also come to light.

The harm caused by the use of marijuana remains a subject of debate. According to the BBC report, ganja is being sold legally even in medicine shops in Thailand. A mall built near Thailand’s famous Khao San Road has been designed on the lines of the theme of ganja, there are different ganja shops here.

After decriminalizing marijuana, its trade has seen a huge boom in Thailand. According to ‘Weed’, a website that sells ganja in the country, there are more than 4000 outlets that sell intoxicating products legally.

Will marijuana be illegal?

However, in a recent interview, Thai Prime Minister Shretha Thavisin hinted at re-criminalizing the use of marijuana. He told Bloomberg TV that his government will try to “reform” marijuana laws within the next six months. “The drug problem has become widespread recently, especially in the north-eastern and northern parts of Thailand,” said Shretha Thavisin.

He further said, “The law has to be rewritten, it needs reform. We can approve its use only for medical use.”

Will business suffer loss?

The Thai Prime Minister’s decision to ban ganja again has created disappointment among the people involved in its business. Nitikrist Atatakrist is a lawyer by profession and has taken a license to grow and sell marijuana plants.

“The cannabis plant has helped so many Thai people, from farmers to small business owners to workers,” Nitikrist Attacrist told CNN. “Any U-turn of any kind (i.e. change in the law) “Would be the worst decision ever.” He further said, “We are strongly against any such law which may harm the industry.”
