According to CNN report, the name of the Iraqi TikToker was Noor Alsafar. He had a total of more than 3 lakh 70 thousand followers on Instagram and TikTok together.

Many people mourned the death of Iraqi TikToker Noor Alsafar. Some people praised the person who fired the shot and appreciated the incident. An Iraqi security official told CNN on condition of anonymity that an investigation has been launched. After death, the body of the deceased has been sent for forensic examination.

The screws are being tightened on LGBTQ
23-year-old Noor Alsafar, known as Noor BM on social media, used to post short videos mostly related to short clothes and makeup. Apart from this, he also used to upload dancing and singing videos. On the death of TikToker Noor Alsafar, Iraqi police spokesman Khaled Almehana on Tuesday (26 September) described the attack as a criminal incident.

He said that he will share important information regarding the incident further. Let us tell you that LGBTQ expression is being cracked down on in Iraq. Steps are being taken towards declaring it a crime in law. However, at present there is no ban on homosexuality in the country. Despite this, LGBTQ people are often targeted under vague morality sections in the penal code.

‘I am not transgender’
Before Noor Alsafar’s death, she faced online abuse as well as questions about sexuality and gender. In a 2020 interview on Iraq’s Al Wala channel, Alsafar had said that I am not transgender. I am not gay. I don’t have any other inclination. I am just a cross-dresser and a model. Alsafar was identified as a man who worked as a model and makeup artist.

In the video, Alsafar talked about facing threats on social media regarding her choice of attire. During a YouTube interview with Iraqi blogger Samir Germani in 2021, Alsafar said in response to a question that I am cautious but not afraid.

Violence against LGBTQ people
Rights groups like IraQueer say there has been a significant increase in violence and discrimination against LGBTQ people in the country in recent months. Recent Quran burnings in Sweden and Denmark have seen rainbow flag-burning protests by supporters of mostly Shia Muslim groups in the country. HRW says violence against LGBTQ people in Iraq “is routinely practiced with impunity”.
