Israel Hamas War: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formed an emergency unity government on Thursday (October 12) with the support of opposition leader Benny Gantz to oversee the war with Hamas. “The nation of Israel is united and now the leadership is also united,” Netanyahu said in a speech from army headquarters in Tel Aviv.

After this news came out, the question is arising in the minds of many people that what kind of government is this in which the opposition is also included. People want to know what ‘Unity Government’ is. Here we are going to explain in detail what the Unity Government of Israel is and why it is needed.

What is ‘Unity Government’?

Israel’s parliament on Thursday passed a unity agreement following the Hamas attack, in which another Netanyahu opponent, Benny Gantz, and five members of his Blue and White party have also joined the government. Under this agreement, an emergency war cabinet has been formed, which includes Netanyahu himself from the Prime Minister’s Likud party, while others include Gantz and Yoav Galant. Gantz is a former army chief.

How will the unity government work?

According to the agreement, the Unity Government will function for the duration of the war. The Emergency War Cabinet is expected to take important decisions regarding the conduct of the war. According to the Financial Times report, as long as Israel’s war with Hamas continues, no other law other than the war-related law will be passed. This means that the controversial judicial reform law put forward by the Netanyahu government has also been put on hold for the time being. This law had divided people in Israel into two camps and there was a lot of opposition to it.

Why are there not more parties in the unity government?

Many other opposition parties in Israel’s parliament have not joined the unity government. It also includes opposition leader Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid and small leftist parties. These people do not want to make any kind of compromise with Netanyahu.

Israeli politics is very divided

If we look closely at Israeli politics, it appears deeply divided. Current PM Netanyahu has been facing corruption charges since last year, but he is an expert in polarizing. Political rivals Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid came together with the aim of keeping the Netanyahu government out of power in the elections held in 2021-22. His government lasted for a few days, but later fell.

After this Netanyahu became PM again. Netanyahu’s ruling coalition now includes, in addition to his own Likud party, ultra-Orthodox allies and a far-right faction that won a landslide half a million votes in last year’s elections.
