Earthquake in Afghanistan: Earthquake has caused devastation in Afghanistan. Several tremors were felt in the northwestern region of Afghanistan in the early hours of Wednesday (11 October 2023). The intensity of these tremors was 6.3 magnitude. According to the American agency, the intensity of the earthquake was 6.3 magnitude and it came at a distance of about 28 kilometers from the capital of Herat province.

The earthquake that occurred in Afghanistan on Saturday last week (7 October 2023) has taken more than 3 thousand lives so far. The government ruling Afghanistan through military transfer has confirmed the number of people killed in the earthquake. Taliban says that this earthquake that occurred there is the worst earthquake in two decades.

Herat is a densely populated city
Herat is the fourth largest city of Afghanistan in terms of population. Recently, when the earthquake occurred on Saturday, a large population was affected by this earthquake. The agency said that the epicenter of the earthquake was located about 40 kilometers northwest of Herat. Even though a rescue operation was started after the earthquake, it still caused a lot of destruction.

Taliban spokesman Abdul Wahid Rayan said the death toll was likely higher than initially reported, with several villages destroyed by the quake and hundreds of civilians trapped under debris. He has sought immediate help to deal with this terrible situation. Ryan said, ‘In addition to the 2,060 dead, 1,240 people have been injured and 1,320 homes have been completely destroyed.’

UNICEF and Taliban conducted rescue operation
At least a dozen teams from the military and non-profit organizations like the Red Crescent were involved to run relief and medical operations immediately after the disaster. The UN sent ambulances and health consultants to the regional hospital affected by the accident. Doctors Without Borders has set up medical tents at Herat Regional Hospital and has already treated more than 300 patients.
