Israel-Palestine Conflict: The conflict between Israel and Palestine has started once again. Hamas, which supports Palestine and rules the Gaza Strip, launched a missile attack on Israel on Saturday (7 October). In retaliation, Israel has also bombed Hamas positions. Bombing has been going on in different parts of Gaza since Saturday. So far, hundreds of civilians of both Israel and Palestine have been killed in this attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described Hamas’ attack as the beginning of war. This is the biggest attack on Israel through Hamas in recent years. Since the beginning of this year, Palestinians were raising their voice against Israel. On top of that, now Hamas has also attacked. In such a situation, there is talk of intifada once again. Let us know what intifada is and why now people are saying that the third intifada has started.

What is intifada?

People generally interpret Intifada as ‘rebellion’ or ‘rebellion’. But in Arabic it means ‘upheaval’ or ‘to get rid of someone’. Whenever there is a conflict between the people of Israel and Palestine, this word is used the most. In simple language, Intifada means an organized rebellion against Israel, which has the support of the Palestinian people.

How many intifadas have taken place so far and why?

The word intifada first became popular in 1987. At that time the Palestinians had raised their voice against Israel’s presence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The first intifada started in 1987, which lasted for six years and ended in 1993. The first intifada, which started due to the death of four Palestinian laborers, was very dangerous. During this period, riots broke out against Israeli soldiers. Israel tried to crush the voice of the Palestinian people.

Clashes between Palestinian and Israeli soldiers started being seen in different parts of the country. This violence stopped only in 1993, when the Oslo Peace Agreement was signed between the Israeli government and the Palestinian organization PLO. In this way the first intifada ended, but by then 1,203 Palestinians and 179 Israelis had been killed. Israel’s international image suffered a lot due to this incident.

The second intifada started in the year 2000 and ended in 2005. In fact, on September 28, 2000, Israeli leader Ariel Sharon visited East Jerusalem under Israeli control. This is how the second intifada began. The Palestinians felt that by doing this Israel could lay claim to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. Within a few months Sharon became the Prime Minister of the country. Hamas got angry with this and started the attack.

Pro-Palestinian Hamas carried out suicide attacks on many Israeli areas. Israel also gave a befitting reply. In this conflict that lasted for five years, 1,330 Israeli and 3,330 Palestinian civilians were killed. However, after the death of PLO leader Yasser Arafat in 2004, the intifada cooled down and then ended completely in 2005. However, due to this, a lot of damage was caused from Gaza Strip to West Bank.

Why is there talk of a third intifada?

In fact, in the last few years, there has been a rise of Jewish right-wingers in Israel. He has an aggressive stance towards Palestine. There is anger among the Palestinian people because of the Jewish right-wingers. There are frequent clashes between Jewish right-wingers and Palestinians in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. Because of this, resentment was gradually increasing. This year, Israel has also raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem several times, which has served to increase tension.

Hamas was continuously warning that Israel should stop its actions in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. The same thing was being repeated from the Palestinian people also. In such a situation, when the conflict started from Saturday, people also saw it as the third intifada. A large number of Hamas fighters broke the borders of the Gaza Strip and entered Israel. This was seen as a rebellion of the Palestinian people against Israel.
