UK London Sikh Patient: In London, Britain, nurses tied the beard of a Sikh patient with plastic gloves and left it in his own urine. After this he was given the food which he could not eat due to religious reasons. This claim has been made by a senior whistleblower of the UK’s top nursing watchdog.

A dossier leaked to The Independent by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) said these nurses were allowed to work despite a Sikh man complaining of discrimination in a note. The report says the nursing regulatory body has failed to address racism for 15 years, which has allowed NMC staff to run amok and apply inconsistent guidance based on discriminatory ideas.

Sikh patient’s turban found lying on the floor
The Sikh patient’s family found his turban lying on the floor and his beard tied with rubber gloves, The Independent reported. It was also told that his case, which was initially closed by the NMC screening team, is now being re-evaluated. A source said that NMC staff is responsible for taking the decision not to proceed with the investigation. He failed to properly consider the replies to the complaint note written by the patient.

The patient has died. The note, written in Punjabi, claimed that the nurses had laughed at him, starved him and not answered his call bell, causing him to become wet and fall in his own urine.

Dangerous racism within NMC
Claims of dangerous racism within the NMC were first raised in 2008. The documents reveal how black and ethnic minority staff fear they will be exposed if they speak out about racism. The documents revealed a climate of fear within the NMC, with staff afraid to report their concerns to the nursing regulator. Accusing the NMC of being defensive and trying to protect its reputation, the whistleblower claimed that deeply toxic conduct within the NMC was leading to counterproductive and failed investigations.

In this sequence, Nurse Letby was sentenced this year for killing seven newborn babies and attempting to kill six others. Andrea Sutcliffe, chief executive and registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), told The Independent that she was extremely sorry that anyone at the NMC had to face racism. I want NMC to be an anti-racist organization and we have a long way to go to achieve this goal.
