Mexico Truck Accident: At least 10 migrants have been killed and about 25 injured after a cargo truck overturned on a highway in southern Mexico. According to Al Jazeera’s report, the accident occurred on Sunday morning in the Mexican state of Chiapas, near the border with Guatemala.
CNN quoted a statement from Mexico’s National Migration Institute as saying that the truck was carrying 27 Cuban citizens ‘irregularly’ on the Pizjiapan-Tonalá highway in Mexico’s southern state of Chiapas. Citing initial reports of the incident, officials said that the driver was driving the truck at high speed and lost control over the truck.
A minor also died
Officials said that the driver fled from the spot after the accident. The number of deaths is 10 women, including a minor and all the injured are undergoing treatment in the hospital. The National Migration Institute (INM) was quoted by CNN as saying, ‘INM will work with consular (embassy) officials to begin the administrative process of repatriating the bodies to their country of origin. Apart from this, those countries should know how many of their citizens have been injured in the accident and what is their condition. Migrants from Central America and the Caribbean sometimes travel through Mexico in trucks and trailers in the hope of reaching the United States.
Such incidents have happened before also
According to a CNN report, in 2021, 55 people were killed and more than 100 were injured when a truck carrying migrants overturned in Chiapas state, bordering Guatemala. Apart from this, this was the second accident involving migrants in Mexico in a week. According to Al Jazeera’s report, earlier on Thursday, two migrants were killed when a truck overturned in Chiapas state.
