Two Manipur students, the subjects of recent widespread attention on social media, have been depicted in two distinct scenarios. In one, they are seated in a verdant compound, flanked by two armed individuals. In another, a more harrowing image emerges—their lifeless forms.

These students, identified as 17-year-old Hijam Linthoingambi and 20-year-old Phijam Hemjit, had vanished without a trace since July 6. However, their presence was forcefully thrust back into the public consciousness through the haunting imagery that appeared on social media.

The first image portrays the two young individuals, seemingly oblivious to the ominous figures lurking behind them, a grim contrast to the innocence of the setting. The second image is more gut-wrenching, displaying the stark reality of their demise.

Manipur’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, has offered assurance to the public, promising swift and resolute action in response to this deeply distressing situation.

A statement released by the Chief Minister’s secretariat read, “The state government has become aware of the distressing images circulating on social media, depicting the missing students, Phijam Hemjit, 20, and Hijam Linthoingambi, 17, who have been absent since July 2023.”

In a significant development, the case has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), indicating the gravity and urgency with which it is being treated.

The statement further elaborated, “The state police, in conjunction with central security agencies, are actively conducting a comprehensive investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding their disappearance and to apprehend those responsible for the tragic demise of these two students. Simultaneously, security forces have initiated a relentless search operation to apprehend the culprits.”

“In response to this heart-wrenching situation, the government affirms its unwavering commitment to deliver swift and severe justice to all those involved in the abduction and murder of Phijam Hemjit and Hijam Linthoingambi. The government stands resolute in ensuring that justice prevails and has pledged to impose severe penalties on any individuals found culpable in this heinous act,” the statement concluded.

The government has called upon the public to exhibit restraint and entrust the authorities with the investigation, as emphasized by the Chief Minister’s secretariat.

MANIPUR VIOLENCE A wave of ethnic violence has gripped Manipur since May 3, claiming the lives of over 150 individuals and leaving more than 3,000 injured. This turmoil erupted following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ held in the hill districts, protesting against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

In response to the escalating crisis, an extensive force of 40,000 central security personnel, in addition to the Manipur Police, was deployed to restore peace and normalcy within the state.

Significantly, the state government recently announced the reinstatement of mobile internet services, a relief for the populace after over four months of suspension. Chief Minister Singh attributed this decision to the improving situation on the ground.
